The 2001-2003 Components of Inventory Change (CINCH) and Rental Dynamics reports are now available for download in PDF format from the HUD USER web site, https://www.huduser.gov/datasets/cinch.html .

CINCH uses the longitudinal features of the American Housing Survey (AHS) to examine how the housing stock changes over time. There are two sets of tables: a forward-looking set that examines what happened to housing units that were in the stock in 2001, and a backward-looking set that examines the sources of the housing units that were in the stock in 2003.

Rental Dynamics is a special application of CINCH that examines changes in the affordability of the rental housing stock. As with CINCH, the Rental Dynamics report presents forward- and backward-looking tables. However, in this report units are classified according to the income required to be able to afford to rent them, along with moving into or out of the rental housing stock.

A third report describes the strategy used to produce consistently-weighted estimates for the forward- and backward-looking tables.

A dataset containing the adjusted weight, CINCH status, and Rental Dynamics status of the housing units used in this study will be available soon. The dataset will also contain the AHS Control number for each case, so that analysts can link the dataset to the 2001 and 2003 AHS datasets, in order to produce custom tabulations or other analyses.
