AHS: changes for 2005N regarding recent movers

As I've mentioned before, we are planning on making some changes to the AHS instrument beginning in 2005 in order to improve our data on income, manufactured housing, and assisted living, among other things. Since the interview is already so long, we are looking for ways to reduce the questions in other areas. Below is one proposal that the HUD and the Census Bureau have been discussing. I'd appreciate any comments you care to make.

Remember, if you want your comments to be read by the entire list, you must address it to AHS@huduser.gov. If you just hit reply, your message will go only to the sender (in this case, me).

-------------------------------------------------

1) One of the changes adopted for the 2005N is to ask the mover questions which formerly were asked for 3 mover groups, only for the reference person.

These items include the following information about the previous residence:
location
structure type
tenure
condo/coop status
number of occupants
did previous reference person move here
was a relative the owner
were costs more/less than current unit

2) We would like to propose, if possible, that we also drop the questions that set up the mover groups among the household members. This is a complex set of programs (and associated edits) which would have little relevance if no additional questions were asked based on the groupings. Data users could still identify movers from the month and year moved in data collected for all household members. They would only lose the information on whether persons with the same move-in date came from the same previous residence.

Since we don't know your uses of the mover group information, we don't know if this is, in fact, vital data. If so, there is no reason to consider
this suggestion.
