Labor Force Data Update

HUD USER recently added estimated August 2010 employment statistics to the State of the Cities Data System for the largest 50 U.S. cities and their metropolitan areas. The data compare the number of residents employed, the unemployment rate, and the size of the labor force in metropolitan areas, central cities, and suburbs for August 2006 and August 2010, the most recent month for which local area unemployment data are available.

HUD’s Office of Policy Development & Research estimates and displays this seasonally unadjusted data in its State of the Cities Data System for core-based statistical areas and individual cities, using Local Area Unemployment Statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The information originates with a federal-state effort in which monthly estimates of total employment and unemployment — key indicators of local economic conditions — are prepared for approximately 7,300 areas.
