COMPONENTS OF INVENTORY CHANGE AND RENTAL DYNAMICS

The Components of Inventory Change (CINCH) and Rental Dynamics project uses the longitudinal features of the American Housing Survey to examine how the housing stock changes from one AHS survey to the next. The analysis links succeeding AHS datasets to look at the changes in the conditions of the sample units. There are two sets of tables: A forward-looking analysis that examines what happened to the housing stock that existed in the earlier year, and a backward-look analysis that describes the sources of the housing stock in the later year. The Rental Dynamics part of the project is a specialized kind of CINCH that concentrates on changes in affordability of the rental housing stock.

The CINCH and Rental Dynamics reports based on the 2007-2009 National AHS are now available for download from the HUD USER web site, https://www.huduser.gov/portal/datasets/cinch.html#2007-2009. In coming weeks we will post reports based on the 2004-2009 New Orleans and Seattle metropolitan AHS. We will also release datasets containing the CINCH and Rental Dynamics recodes, plus the special longitudinal weights.

UPDATED REPORT ON HIGH RENT BURDENS

An updated report on "Investigating Very High Rent Burdens Among Renters in the American Housing Survey" has been posted to the HUD USER web site, https://www.huduser.gov/portal/datasets/ahs.html#analyses. This study examines the puzzling phenomenon of persistent rent burdens over 50% (and sometimes 100%) of household income that are observed in AHS data.

All of these reports were written by Frederick J. Eggers and Fouad Moumen of Econometrica, Inc., under contract with HUD's Office of Policy Development and Research.
