Learning from Our Elders: Culturally and Environmentally Responsive Design for Tribal Communities «

Training Overview
Sustainable design and construction offer tribal communities many benefits: control over energy costs, more durable and healthy housing, and a lighter environmental footprint. This 2-day HUD-sponsored training uses real-life case studies of award-winning culturally and environmentally responsive tribal architecture to explore issues of sustainable residential and community construction. Trainer Architect Daniel Glenn will draw on his work in tribal communities including the Little Big Horn College campus; the Puyallup Tribe’s Place of Hidden Waters, the 2012 LEED® for Homes Project of the Year; the LEED® Platinum University of Montana Native American Center; his work for the HUD Sustainable Construction in Indian Country Initiative; and projects published in the 2013 book, New Architecture on Indigenous Lands. Training may include tours of local tribal sustainable construction.

Who should attend: housing directors, maintenance specialists, project developers, construction specialists, planners, housing commissioners, tribal executive branch members, tribal energy specialists, nonprofit housing development organizations, and others interested in sustainable building.
