The Department of Housing and Urban Development will provide $60 million to local public housing agencies to fund permanent housing for homeless veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs said.

The assistance will be offered through the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program. The program combines HUD rental assistance through local housing authorities in tandem with case management and clinical services provided by VA medical centers.

A total of 48,385 vouchers have been awarded under the program since 2008, currently assisting 42,557 formerly homeless vets, VA said.

HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan and VA Secretary Eric Shinseki announced the funding in an address to the National Coalition of Homeless Veterans conference held May 29 in Washington, D.C. More program funding is expected to be announced this summer.
