Anchor Institutions: HBCUs Leading the Way to Community Transformation
On April 15, 2014, HUD's Office of University Partnerships (OUP) hosted an event that showcased community and economic development activities in low-wealth communities of two historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). By maximizing available resources and nurturing collaborations with federal, state, and local entities, the efforts of the two institutions demonstrate best practices in building capacity and strengthening their surrounding communities. Representatives from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina; Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland; and their affiliated community development corporations (CDCs) spoke about the importance of building community partnerships and the results of their work, representing a well-established 15-year program and a relatively new 4-year program, respectively. Illinois Institute of Technology's Community Outreach Initiatives
"IIT is not only in the community, but also an integral part of the community," says the mission statement of the Office of Community Affairs and Outreach Programs (OCA) at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), reflecting the university's commitment to serving the community surrounding the campus — Bronzeville, including the Greater Grand Boulevard and Douglas neighborhoods. With this guidance, OCA has joined partnerships and projects that have benefitted both the community and the school's faculty, staff, and students. A significant investment was made in OCA's efforts in 1998 when IIT received a 3-year, $395,000 Community Outreach and Partnerships Center (COPC) grant from HUD. The university used the grant to help establish the Center for Community Development and Technology and support its activities in education, economic development, and housing. IIT further partnered with local organizations and secured additional funding from other public and private sources. Read More

Grantee Spotlight: HUD-Funded E2 Initiative Helps Entrepreneurship Flourish in Jersey City
Growing up, Joanna De Leon always imagined herself as owning her own business — she just did not expect it to happen so soon. A few years ago, De Leon enrolled in the Community Business Academy (CBA) at Rising Tide Capital, a nonprofit based in Jersey City, New Jersey. Designed as an intensive 12-week course in management and planning for microenterprises, the academy is the centerpiece of Rising Tide's entrepreneurship-driven model of community development. Today, De Leon owns a small screen-printing business near the Jersey City neighborhood where she grew up, operating out of an office within the Business Development Incubator (BDI) at New Jersey City University (NJCU).
