St. Louis Hospitals Help to Sustain the Forest Park Southeast and Central West End Neighborhoods

HUD User publishes a series of case studies based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities and support sustainable community development. The projects and community development efforts featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.

Washington University Medical Center, which includes Washington University School of Medicine and BJC HealthCare, has long maintained a commitment to neighborhoods west of downtown St. Louis, Missouri. The medical center created Washington University Medical Center Redevelopment Corporation (WUMCRC), which has helped to stabilize two nearby neighborhoods by providing funding for area amenities, such as the Adams Park Community Center, and by acquiring properties and selling them to developers dedicated to the community. As WUMCRC’s active role in land development winds down, the organization has focused on building community capacity to address remaining issues in the neighborhoods and supporting community institutions.
