Improving the Respiratory Health of Alaska Native Children

HUD User publishes a series of case studies based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities and support sustainable community development. The projects and community development efforts featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.

The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium — a nonprofit tribal health organization serving Alaska Native and American Indian people — recently undertook an air quality and respiratory health project involving 63 households in 8 communities in Southwest Alaska. The project included analyses of air quality in participants' houses, home improvements to reduce indoor air pollutants, and education about maintaining healthy air quality. Through the project and subsequent activities, the consortium and its partners — community residents, tribal housing authorities, regional health corporations, and environmental specialists — have reduced the incidence of breathing–related illnesses, to which children are particularly vulnerable.
