Expanding Multigenerational Housing Options


During the National Community Reinvestment Coalition's Just Economy conference, held in March 2019, panelists discussed the benefits of multigenerational housing in a session titled "Everybody under one roof: Multigenerational housing." The four speakers addressed the advantages that multigenerational housing affords to seniors, children, and working parents, and examined housing formats including accessory dwelling units and multigenerational multifamily rental housing.

Neighborhood Change: Tools for Getting an Early Look at Change
In the leadership message, PD&R's general deputy assistant secretary Todd M. Richardson discusses tools available to measure neighborhood change. Richardson describes PD&R data tools, including the USPS Vacancy and Picture of Subsidized Housing datasets, that can help housing professionals and policymakers understand the impact of change on the price and availability of housing, predict problems such as blight, and much more.

Discussing Research, Practice, and Policy: PD&R's Quarterly Update
Each quarter, PD&R hosts a public event at HUD Headquarters in Washington, DC, to announce its latest findings on the state of the housing market and convene expert panelists to discuss current issues in urban development. The June 2019 update will focus on Opportunity Zones and feature speakers from the investment, academic, and public sectors. Members of the public may register to attend either in person or via webcast.

In Practice:
Supportive Housing for Individuals With Mental Health Conditions in Columbus, Ohio
Opened in the summer of 2018 on the north side of Columbus, Ohio, Laurel Green Apartments is a 40-unit affordable supportive housing development for residents with severe mental health conditions. The $7.3 million project was developed by the local nonprofit Community Housing Network, a contract agency of the Alcohol, Drug, and Mental Health Board of Franklin County. Laurel Green prioritizes individuals who are ready to leave an institutional setting like a hospital, but who would face homelessness upon release.
