Using Housing Affordability as a Key to Preserving Diversity Along the North Branch of the Chicago River


In April 2019, the American Planning Association held its annual conference in San Francisco, California. In a panel titled "Workforce Housing Strategies from Chicago Neighborhoods," three speakers discussed strategies for preserving diversity in the historic immigrant neighborhoods of Albany Park, Irving Park, and North Park. The panelists described residents' concern about gentrification in the three neighborhoods, and relayed plans to preserve and expand affordable housing in order to prevent economic displacement.

Unique Partnerships Create a Community of Prefabricated Homes in Missoula, Montana
Opened in 2019 by the nonprofit Homeword, Montana Street Homes is a six-unit infill development of affordable ownership housing in Missoula, Montana. The single one-bedroom and five two-bedroom factory-built homes are arranged around a central courtyard on a property adjacent to the headquarters of the Missoula Food Bank and Community Center. Eligible buyers must earn no more than 80 percent of the area median income, and the land is held by Trust Montana in order to insure long-term affordability.

The Miami CHMA Has Balanced Housing Markets, but Rising Sales Prices Act as a Barrier to Homeownership
The most recent article in a series focusing on HUD's Comprehensive Housing Market Analyses (CHMAs) examines the Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall, Florida Housing Market Area (Miami HMA). Located on southeast Florida's Atlantic coast, the Miami HMA includes 5 cities and has an estimated population of 2.7 million. All employment sectors saw moderate growth from February 2018–February 2019, and growth is expected to continue in the next three years. In this period, the rental and sales markets were balanced.
