According to the Anderson Independent-Mail (8/26, Slade, 39K), "By 2010, the rate of homeownership in South Carolina had fallen below 70 percent, down from 74 percent in 2000, a Post and Courier analysis of census data found." The data means 187,000 people fewer people owns homes, the article notes, stating "Homeownership rates declined throughout the tri-county area and across the state, and all indications suggest the trend is continuing. Developers have been rolling out plans for more apartment buildings, while home sales tread water."
