Atlanta aims to end Veteran Homelessness

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (9/25, McWilliams, 209K) reports, "Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed joined advocates for the homeless on Monday to announce a goal of ending chronic homelessness among military veterans in Atlanta within 15 months." According to the Journal-Constitution, Atlanta "housed 131 veterans in 100 days by cutting wait times with the help of federal agencies and nonprofits. The plan is to find housing for another 300 chronically homeless veterans by December 2013."

This story is also covered by the WABE-FM Atlanta (9/25, Wirth) website, which notes that 52-year-old Barrett Griffin is a formerly homeless veteran who used a voucher program to move "into his own apartment in East Atlanta." Griffin called the program a "gift from God." WABE adds, "The voucher program is part of partnership between the federal office of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Veterans Affairs and several other agencies and nonprofits."
