Solar Decathlon Home Houses Low-income D.C. Family

USA Today (10/24) reports that “a low-income family of four is moving into one of 19 homes in this year’s Solar Decathlon, a US-funded academic competition to build the world’s best solar-powered home that ended earlier this month in Washington, D.C.” The home was built by “students at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City and Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., to use up to 80% less energy than other new houses.” It also “aims to be the first home in the nation’s capital to earn certification from the Passive House Institute, a private Illinois-based group that has the toughest US standards for energy efficiency.”
