On Wednesday April 30, representatives of HUD’s Sustainable Construction in Indian Country (SCinIC) initiative and the Office of Native American Programs (ONAP) presented at Arizona State University’s popular Construction in Indian Country national conference.

• Session: 10:15 – 11:45 am. Innovations Needed to Build Sustainable and Healthy Tribal Communities: A Cold Climate Case Study of Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, and Sustainable Neighborhood Development. Presenters Retha Herne and Kate Brown discussed the Sunrise Acres Phase 2 housing development and how it represents the St. Regis Mohawk Indian Tribe’s commitment to sustainable, healthy tribal communities. Presenter Kevin Fitzgibbons discussed funding strategies and resources.

• Luncheon: 12:00 – 1:30 pm. ONAP Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) Rodger Boyd provided the luncheon keynote.

• Housing Forum: 2:00 – 5:00 pm. Mssrs. Boyd and Fitzgibbons took part in a forum on how Native American tribal nations are rethinking housing development.

The conference ran from April – 30, 2014 and took place in Chandler, AZ.

SCinIC is a project of HUD’s Office of Policy Development and Research and ONAP. It seeks to encourage use of sustainable materials and construction techniques in housing built in Native American communities.
