In the Leadership Message, Cindy Campbell, director of the International and Philanthropic Affairs Division at PD&R, discusses the transformation of some of the city’s legacy industrial and other infrastructure. The King’s Cross Coal Drops Yard, for example, was once used as an area for storing coal from South Yorkshire. Today, a 20-year redevelopment project has transformed the former industrial site into an area with new retail space, housing, and public spaces. Wynne Watts Commons opened in 2022 in the Wilkes East neighborhood of Gresham, Oregon, near Portland. With 150 affordable housing units, including 30 reserved for people with disabilities, Wynne Watts combines sustainable architecture and universal design to create a welcoming and inclusive environment in the largest net-zero affordable housing development in the Pacific Northwest. Call for Entries for the 2024 Public-Philanthropic Partnerships Secretary’s Award
Every year since 2012, HUD’s International and Philanthropic Affairs Division (IPAD) has partnered with the Council on Foundations to host and select the winners of the Secretary’s Award for Public-Philanthropic Partnerships. IPAD is excited to open the Call for Entries for the 2024 award cycle. The Secretary’s Award for Public-Philanthropic Partnerships honors excellence in cross-sector strategic partnerships between the philanthropic and public sectors. PD&R and Public Housing
Over the past five decades, the Office of Policy Development & Research has supported HUD’s dual mission of preserving public housing stock and researching innovative and alternative approaches to housing assistance. PD&R’s research offers insights into the more than 900,000 housing units owned and administered by local public housing agencies serving nearly 2 million people. Over the years, various programs have worked to improve public housing, including the HOPE VI program, the Choice Neighborhoods initiative, and the Rental Assistance Demonstration program.
