1999 National Survey

All of the files on the HUD USER web site have been updated to reflect the
new 1999 national file.  In addition to the SAS file which we announced
earlier, the ASCII file and documentation archive have been updated.  There
is also an updater package for those of you who already had the previous
version of the dataset (SAS or ASCII) and need only the changed variables.
The URL for the 1999 page is
https://www.huduser.gov/portal/datasets/ahs.html.  The alterations &
replacements tables on the Census Bureau web site have not yet been
updated, but the change is in the works.

2001 National Survey

As you probably know, the published tabulations from the 2001 survey are
weighted using 1990 metro area geography.  The weights on the public use
file (PUF) reflect 1980 geography, consistent with previous surveys.  I am
happy to announce that the Census Bureau's Disclosure Review Board has
okayed the release of 1990 weights for the PUF as well.  Thus, there will
be an update to the 2001 dataset shortly, adding a second weight variable.
We will issue an update package for those of you that have the data
already.

The 2001 wall chart has gone to the printer.  We will probably have copies
in a couple weeks.

2005 National Survey

The AHS reports are much larger than most printed reports that the Census
Bureau now does.  With the availability of the internet as a source for
detailed tabulations, most other surveys have reduced the amount of paper
they use.  We are probably going to go in that direction as well.  If
anyone has suggestions for what parts of the current report should
definitely stay on paper, please send me an email or reply to the list.

Property Owners and Managers Survey (POMS)

The Property Owners and Mangers Survey was a "son of AHS," based on the
rental units identified in the 1993 national survey.  We at HUD are working
on our long-term research program, and one idea is to do a new POMS.  We
would appreciate hearing from anyone who found the original survey useful.
References to specific publications or studies are especially welcome.
