Healthy Beginnings at Home Explores a Novel Approach to Reducing Infant Mortality in Columbus, Ohio

HUD User publishes a series of case studies based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities and support sustainable community development. The projects and community development efforts featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.

Conducted in Franklin County, Ohio, Healthy Beginnings at Home was a $2 million pilot program to test the impact of housing interventions on the health outcomes of babies and pregnant women experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. The collective impact organization CelebrateOne coordinated the study, which yielded encouraging results. All the babies in the intervention group, which received housing assistance, were born alive, and 78 percent were full-term and had healthy birth weights. Only 13 percent of the babies in the intervention group required a stay in a neonatal intensive care unit, compared to 32 percent in the control group. Additional studies based on this pilot are proceeding in Ohio.
