Posted Date: February 02, 2021

This historic document is the 1989 codebook of the American Housing Survey (AHS). A codebook is a technical publication intended to provide information on the structure, contents, and layout of a data file, in this case historic data tapes. The bulk of the codebook consists of lists of variables available for 35 surveys administered or planned for use between 1973 and 1993. This document was prepared for HUD by Abt Associates, which took over Columbia University’s maintenance of the AHS codebook in 1982. Prior to 1984, the Annual Housing Survey was given yearly to supplement the U.S. Census Bureau’s 10-year Population and Housing Census; in subsequent years its name changed to the American Community Survey, and it was administered every other year. Though the authors acknowledge the name change, this document continues to refer to the AHS as the Annual Housing Survey.
