The American Housing Survey is the most comprehensive source of data about housing conditions in the United States. Begun in 1973, the national survey provides a biennial update on the nation’s housing stock. This report’s graphs and tables document the long-term changes in major measures of the size, composition, and quality of housing in the nation from 1973 to 2005, as the population has grown, aged, become more diverse—and, in general, become better housed. Major sections of the report cover the size, location, and status of the housing stock; structural characteristics of units; quality of the housing stock; housing costs; home values and mortgage financing; neighborhood conditions; commuting patterns; characteristics of households and householders; and future trends in housing. The appendixes provide a handy source of long-run time series that normally are spread over many years of individual survey reports.
