Through an interagency agreement with the Department of Energy, HUD is funding an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) research fellow to develop nationwide spatial data on extreme heat and cold. The data development process uses daily minimum and maximum temperature observations to describe the frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme temperature events across the United States over the 100-yr period from 1913 to 2012. Observed trends in extreme temperature are also examined to determine which areas in the US are experiencing more frequent, more intense, or longer extreme temperature events. Upon completion, these data will be incorporated into the enterprise geographic information system (eGIS).
