I am pleased to report that the 2011 American Housing Survey began data collection on Monday, July 18. As of yesterday, July 21, 265 cases had been checked in. Only 172,651 cases to go! The 2011 survey includes a national sample, 29 metro samples, and an oversample of assisted housing units, drawn from HUD administrative records. The instrument features topical modules on healthy homes and housing modifications to assist the disabled, plus a redesigned mortgage module.

In other news, we have posted a guide to the AHS Internal Use File (IUF) on the HUD USER web site, at https://www.huduser.gov/portal/datasets/ahs.html#supplements. While the better-known public use file (PUF) is freely downloadable from our web site, the IUF can be accessed only at Census Bureau Regional Data Centers, and only by analysts who have sworn Title 13 status. The advantage of using the IUF is that it contains considerably more information about the location of sample cases than can be revealed on the PUF. It also contains data that are not topcoded. The IUF guide that we have just posted explains the structure of the IUF, what you need to do to get access, and the restrictions that apply to disseminating your findings.
