The HUD USER web site (https://www.huduser.gov/portal/datasets/ahs.html) has new products related to the American Housing Survey (AHS):

  • An updated codebook (version 2.1) that includes all of the changes made in the 2011 survey.
  • A new version of the 2011 AHS public use file (PUF). This revision is numbered 1.2.
  • The descriptive statistics file has been updated to reflect the changes in PUF version 1.2.

Here is a summary of the changes in version 1.2 of the PUF. Note that this summary is also included in the version control document on the AHS 2011 web page.

  • Correction: 57 records showed incorrect values or B for ZONE. Additionally 11 of those records showed incorrect or B values for the other geographic variables. In all instances the values were changed to 9, 99, or 999.
  • New Variable: HUDADMIN indicates whether a unit received government rental assistance (based on HUD administrative data).
  • New Variable: HUDSAMP indicates whether a unit was part of the 2011 oversample of subsidized housing.
  • New File: PYTC was added to allow users to identify and track cases that are not on the 2011 PUF due to (1) being a prior year Type C, (2) being part of a sample reduction, or (3) belonging to a supplemental sample that was not interviewed in the current year. This file only contains cases that would have otherwise been in sample in the current year if they had not met one of these three conditions (e.g. cases from MSAs that were in sample in the current interview year.)
