Lisbon’s Walkability
In the leadership message, PD&R’s director for International and Philanthropic Innovation Cynthia Campbell discusses a recent trip to Lisbon, Portugal, and recounts the city’s historic architecture, transit system, bike lanes, and wide sidewalks. Lisbon’s historic city center is closed to automobiles, allowing for safe and enjoyable strolling. Since 1986, a paving school established by the Lisbon City Council has trained 224 pavers, or calceteiros, to maintain and install new pavement designs throughout the city’s streets.

Westside Atlanta Housing Project Helps Legacy Residents Stay in Community
Nonprofit Westside Future Fund (WFF) focuses on improving the social and economic livelihood of residents of Atlanta’s four predominately African-American Westside neighborhoods. As a part of the organization’s efforts to ensure residents are not priced out of their community, WFF acquired an abandoned apartment complex at 395 James P. Brawley Drive and rehabilitated the 3 buildings into 31 modern, affordable apartments. Applicants are prioritized based on the number of years they have lived in one of these four neighborhoods as well as their education and employment connections to the Westside.

The trending article discusses the 2022 Innovation in Affordable Housing Student Design and Planning Competition. This year’s competition requires students to find innovative solutions for redeveloping the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center complex into affordable housing in a mixed-use and mixed-income setting. On March 10, 2022, the four finalist teams, two representing the University of California Berkeley, and one each from the University of Maryland and the University of Kansas, traveled to Atlanta to learn about the history of the site. On April 13, 2022, the teams will present their design proposals, and a jury of housing industry professionals will decide the winner and runner-up.
