Howard University established the Center of Excellence in Housing and Urban Research and Policy (CHURP) to help achieve an equitable and inclusionary society where currently underserved populations are served and inequities in housing, health, education, economic well-being, and community development are overcome through policy implementation. Partners include four HBCUs (Bowie State, Morgan State, Spelman, and North Carolina A&T), the University of Maryland's National Center for Smart Growth, and the Coalition for Non-profit Housing and Economic Development. The COE is conducting a series of research projects that address four interacting factors – housing development, health, voice (engagement with the underserved), and built environment.
