Converted Parochial School Provides Sustainable, Supportive Housing in Ithaca
In Ithaca, New York, home of Cornell University, 33 percent of residents live at or below the federal poverty line, and a growing number of residents are experiencing homelessness. To address the growing need for affordable and supportive housing, local developer Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services opened Founders Way in November 2022 in the converted former Immaculate Conception School. Founders Way consists of 75 units, including studios, 4-, 3-, 2-, and 1-bedroom units, all of which are reserved for families earning between 30 percent and 100 percent of the area median income. Six units are reserved for survivors of domestic violence, seven for youth aged 18 to 25, and nine are for individuals living with an intellectual or developmental disability.

Back to the Future: Advancing Innovative Technologies To Build Better, More Affordable Homes
HUD has a long history of promoting housing technology and innovation. HUD’s current research agenda on innovation traces back to the Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH). From 1998 to 2008, PATH pursued its mission to research building technologies that would improve the general quality and performance of housing as well as expand and preserve the nation’s supply of affordable housing. Even after the program’s termination, PATH research has consistently ranked among the top 10 most-searched documents on the HUD User website. Subsequent research efforts have built on PATH’s legacy while broadening PD&R’s research agenda to include strategies that increase housing supply through innovative market interventions.
