HUD's Housing Choice Voucher Administrative Fee Study: A Study in Collaboration

HUD recently released the Housing Choice Voucher Program Administrative Fee Study, which will help determine how much public housing agencies should be compensated to administer housing choice vouchers as well as aid in developing a formula to distribute those resources. Senior staff in HUD’s Office of Policy Development and Research discuss how collaborative efforts within and between HUD offices and with research and industry leaders were critical to initiating and managing the study.

Multigenerational Development Meets Housing Needs in Shelburne

A new mixed-income, multigenerational development, Harrington Village and Wright House, provides 72 affordable and 6 market rate units in the town of Shelburne, Vermont. This development is meeting a need for affordable and adaptable housing in Chittenden County, where more than 50 percent of renter households face housing cost burdens and housing demand for the 65- to 74-year-old cohort is projected to increase significantly by 2020.

Innovations in the 2013 American Housing Survey: An Interview with Shawn Bucholtz

In addition to recurring questions about housing costs and housing quality, the American Housing Survey (AHS) includes rotating topical modules, which gather information about topics of special interest to HUD and the AHS user community. Director of PD&R's Housing and Demographic Analysis Division Shawn Bucholtz details the process by which HUD chooses these topical modules, and he discusses the reasoning behind the modules chosen for the 2015 AHS.

Policy Update:
The Research Basis for Disaster Resilience

Detailed data on natural disasters are increasingly accessible and indicate that natural disasters are becoming more frequent and costly. As these data illustrate the need to emphasize disaster-resilient development, academics and planning experts are developing best practice guidelines for hazard mitigation strategies.

Spotlight on PD&R Data:
U.S. Housing Market Conditions

PD&R's U.S. Housing Market Conditions (USHMC) website contains national, regional, state, metropolitan, and local data and analysis in one location. Featured USHMC charts highlight the monthly and annual National Association of Home Builders survey data on builders' views of home sales activity, including current sales activity, prospective buyer traffic, and future sales expectations.

The Housing Affordability Opportunity
Millions of households in the United States are facing significant problems associated with housing affordability. In response, HUD's Office of Policy Development and Research and cosponsors Habitat for Humanity International and Enterprise Community Partners hosted a discussion in which Vice President Joe Biden, HUD Secretary Julián Castro, and two expert panels considered how research, policies, and partnerships could be utilized to turn the housing affordability crisis into a housing affordability opportunity.
